But it is important to plan ahead and be prepared.<\/h2>\n<p>Below are ten steps that should be taken if you have been involved in an auto accident.<\/p>\n<p><b>1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><b>Stay at the scene and remain calm:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>If you leave, you may be charged with a \u201chit and run.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>For safety, move as far off the roadway as possible. But remain at the scene of the accident.<\/li>\n<li>Warn oncoming traffic by activating your hazard warning lights.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><b>Check on all drivers and passengers:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Check to make sure everyone involved is okay. \u00a0Get medical attention for anyone who may need it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><b>Call the police:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>If the accident involves bodily injury and\/or significant property damage.<\/li>\n<li>Ask that a police report be filed and obtain their name and badge numbers.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><b>Do NOT apologize or admit guilt:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Remember, \u00a0it might not be evident who is at fault or more at fault.\u00a0 <strong>Be cordial and cooperative, but do not apologize or admit guilt. \u00a0DO NOT\u00a0<\/strong>have conversations about the accident with the other party or even your own passengers at the scene of the accident.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>5)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><b>Exchange information:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Obtain the other driver&#8217;s name, number, address, driver&#8217;s license, license plate number and insurance information.
